The Best Big Men Ever

You may have noticed the poll that was running on the main page over the last week asking who the best big man ever in sports entertainment is/was. I thought that needed a little more discussion and also an option for you all to leave your opinions and whether you agree with me or not.

My top 5 are as follows:

Sid
For detailed thoughts on the Sycho one I suggest you read the blog I wrote last week here. I’d jump out of my seat if I ever heard his music again and saw Sid walk down to the ring.

Vader
For a man of such size and girth Vader could move around the ring like a Cruiserweight, and the stuff he could do from the top rope was mind boggling. He had some amazing matches in WCW against the likes of Sting and Cactus Jack and over in Japan he was a sensation. I remember seeing a match where he tagged with Bam Bam Bigelow (another contender?) against the Steiner Brothers and it was so brutal I thought the TV screen may crack! In WWE he made one of the best debuts ever when he stormed the ring after being eliminated at Royal Rumble 1996, and threw everyone out, including eventual winner Shawn Michaels. Then there was his brutal attack on Gorilla Monsoon which led to him suspending for a few months. In spite of great matches against Shawn Michaels, Bret Hart and Undertaker, Vader never seemed to realise his potential in WWE.

Undertaker
The way Undertaker moves around and adjusts to any style can have you forgetting sometimes that he is in fact one of the biggest Superstars ever to set foot in the ring. Undertaker has spent more time consistently headlining than any other Superstar in history and has had countless match of the year contenders, most recently against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 25 and WrestleMania 26. Undertaker also possesses one of the greatest entrances of all time, and it’s one that sends a tingle my spine whenever I am lucky to experience it live. While he has the WWE Universe cheering his every move these days, in the late 90s he was one of the most hated and despicable characters in Sports Entertainment. I can’t talk about Undertaker without mentioning his WrestleMania streak, which currently stands at an almost unbelievable 19-0. Just who will he go up against at next year’s WrestleMania and will he remain undefeated?

Andre The Giant
Not the most agile of men but one of the biggest global Superstars ever in the history of sports entertainment. His part in WrestleMania III alone is enough to put him in the elite group of all-time greats. He had a presence that nobody has ever been able to replicate and probably never will. This is a guy that people paid the ticket price just to see – it didn’t matter what he did, they just wanted to see this massive mountain of a man in the flesh. I have a favourite memory of Andre and that’s after his match at WrestleMania 6 when he head-butted Bobby Heenan and threw him off the little cart that took the Superstars to and from the ring.

Kevin Nash/Diesel
When he first arrived in WWE in the early 90s as the bodyguard of Shawn Michaels he looked like The Terminator with his leather jacket and sunglasses, but he soon became one of the absolute best and his beat downs in the ring were second only to his razor sharp wit on the microphone. Not satisfied with being one of the longest reigning World Champions in WWE history, he then headed over to WCW where he was a founding member of the nWo. He had a ground breaking match with Bret Hart at Survivor Series 1995 which was extreme before extreme became the in thing. His return to WWE at No Way Out 2002 had me whooping with excitement, though The Rock was also a star of that particular show with his backstage impressions of the 3 returning nWo Superstars. More recently he made a surprising appearance at Royal Rumble 2011 and received one of the best crowd reactions of the night. Could there be one more run left for the master of the Jackknife Powerbomb?

So, there are mine. Do you agree or God forbid disagree? Why not leave a comment and let me know who you think are the best big men in the history of Sports Entertainment.

Nobody will ever overcome the undertaker. He ist the best there is, the best there was and the best there ever will be...at least in the big man?s area.

Undertaker was probably the best big man in the history of wrestling but I think Sid Justice had everything to rule this sport entertainment. He appeared powerful and when I was (very) young at WM VIII I seriously believed that Hulkamania could collapse after a battle with the gloves off!

You can't count out Umaga! for his size he could definatley move around as well as someone with half his size and weight. His samoan spike was one of the deadliest finishing moves ever in Pro wrestling and any opponent that stood against him in the ring kinew that this was going to be no easy job. He was Un-defeated for the better part of a year and captured the I-C Title on numerous occasions. He may not be with us now, but in my mind, Umaga is one of the greatest Big men to ever grace the squared circle! R.I.P Eddie Fatu.
