KUNDENREZENSIONEN
There is pretty much one reason to buy this DVD- the emotional induction of Bobby Heenan into the WWE Hall of Fame. Maybe it is just because Bobby Heenan is in my opinion the greatest manager of all time, and actually one of my favourite wrestling personalities, but his induction was just perfect. It just seemed to sum up everything that made Bobby so great, and is almost worth the entire price of the DVD alone.
There are other enjoyable moments on this two disc set though. Inductions wise most are nothing really that special unless you are big fans of that wrestler, but Billy Graham's induction is a bit of a tearjerker, and it's nice to see talented guys like Tito Santana who were never the big stars but could always be relied upon to put on solid matches with any opponent get their due.
Looking to the extras there are again a few moments that stand out. All the Bobby Heenan segments are of course awesome, and there are two enjoyable slugfests in the form of the Alley Fight between Sgt Slaughter and Pat Patterson and the steel cage battle between Tito Santana and Greg Valentine. But there is a lot of filler on there as well- sure it seems like blasphemy to call a bout between two legends like Billy Graham and Bruno Sammartino 'filler', but 70's wrestling really is an acquired taste. And I would have much rather they stuck on another couple of Bobby Heenan segments than Andre the Giant Vs Big John Studd and Bob Backlund Vs Jesse Ventura. Though I realise it's important the legends get their due, the matches really aren't very entertaining.
Overall though there is enough goodness spread across these two discs to justify a purchase, and it serves as an interesting time capsule from the late 1970's and early 1980's. Fans of the modern day product probably won't enjoy the style and should steer clear of this- but then, seeing what's on this, you probably knew this. For wrestling historians though, the Bobby Heenan induction will be totally worth it, and the extras and the other inductions will present some light nostalgia.
Bel Disco con bei incontri dell'epoca.....
Molto interessante anche l'induzione a tutti i wrestler....
In 2004, the night before the historic WrestleMania XX in New York City, WWE hosted the first Hall Of Fame Ceremony in 8 years. Since then, the company has held the increasingly popular tribute event every year prior to WrestleMania, with many legends and great names of the past being inducted into the Hall Of Fame.
2004's ceremony, the only one released as a stand-alone DVD release, was somewhat less glitzy than more recent ones, but it loses nothing in entertainment value. Whilst inductees such as Titio Santana and Harley Race are over-endowed in the charisma department, they still have some interesting tales to tell, and the audience of mostly WWE alumni past and present are always respectful.
My favourite induction was from the legendary wrestler-turned-manager-turned=announcer Bobby 'The Brain' Heenan. On cracking form despite recovering from throat cancer, Heenan had everyone in the building, and everyone watching the DVD probably, cracking up with laughter. 'The Weasel' remains one of the funniest and most talented guys to ever work in the wrestling business, and he was as worthy a Hall Of Fame inductee as anyone there's been.
We hear from guys like Ric Flair, Triple H and Kane, who of course, inducted his "arch-enemy" Pete Rose. The induction of Rose was met with media derision at the time, with WWE being accused of not taking it's Hall Of Fame seriously by including a baseball player who has made a handful of comedy cameos at WrestleManias, always involving 'The Big Red Machine'. But Rose was witty enough on the night to come over as a decent inductee, even if, in the cold light of day, he doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same breath as Hulk Hogan, Bret Hart, Ric Flair and Steve Austin.
Those of you who love both the Hall Of Fame and classic wrestling like I do (this DVD has some interesting bonus matches) should make this an essential purchase if you don't already have it. Remember that this HOF Ceremony is not available on the WrestleMania XX DVD, so what are you waiting for? Relive the comeback that was the 2004 Hall Of Fame, it was a lot of fun!
